About the piece
In 1898, fresh from the success of his Ballade in A minor, Coleridge-Taylor composed Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, inspired by Longfellow’s poem. The premiere, conducted by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, was a sensation, with even Sir Arthur Sullivan praising Coleridge-Taylor’s genius. The event was hailed as a milestone in English musical history, marking immediate international success for the composer.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, dubbed the “African Mahler,” was a celebrated British composer and conductor known for his compositions based on Longfellow’s “The Song of Hiawatha.” His legacy lives on through his enduring musical contributions, while his children, Hiawatha and Avril, also pursued musical careers.
